Anthony was the son of William and Sarah (Minto) Garland. He was born in Rex, Oregon. Anthony and his brother Ewart Garland went to Jordan, Garfield Co., Montana to live when there was plans for a railroad to be put in. He was there where he filled out his draft registration June 5. 1917. Family say he served in WWI overseas. In 1920 the census record finds Anthony back at his parents home working in a wood camp cutting wood. September 27, 1921 finds him back in Garfield Co., Montana on land records. The plans for the railroad changed and the Railroad was diverted another direction and the profit of that land dropped. He likely sold it to go on. He is on City records in 1923 at his brother-in-law C. L. Wilsen's residence in Bremerton, Washington. He went to work for the US Navy Yard. He purchased a house near his sister Agnes, who preceded him in death with throat cancer in 1929. Anthony's Aunt Margaret Minto moved to Anthony's house to help with the household needs. She was there at the time of the 1930 census. Anthony suffered a severe back injury from a fall where he worked at the U.S. Navy Yard. He was laid up in bed with the injury. His sister Gladys came up to help other family take care of Anthony. I doubt the Navy paid his medical expenses nor gave him sick leave at that time. It was before Social Security would have paid any disability for anyone injured and unable to work. Anthony's nephew, Dr. James Garland said, "the injury would have been excessively painful. The worse kind of back pain there is." He had been ill several days with influenza. He was very likely coughing with increased pain. Family has related that Gladys was told to go collect the mail before this incident occurred and she came back in the house to find her brother deceased. The newspaper had told about his influenza. A day later it said he was showing some improvement. Then the article came out with a top of the page headline of his death. It said his death was a self inflicted gunshot wound through the head. Anthony was engaged to marry Frances Peterson at the time of his death. She married Harold A. Anderson in 1936. They had 3 children. After Mr. Anderson died at age 62 she married Joung Beck. She died in 2007.
