From New York the couple took the train across the Nation to San Fransisco, California. From California they took a ship to Portland where they lived on the East side of the river from 1876 to 1879 then in 1879 they moved to their farm in Rex, Oregon. Garland Rd. was named for William Garland, and his property was at the top of the hill at the end of the road. William worked as a brick layer in Portland.
