Marvin Garland drowned in a effort to rescue four young ladies who were in danger of drowning. The tragedy happened at Fernwood Beach about 2 1/2 miles from Newberg. Marvin was a good swimmer. Family claims he had been sick, and should have stayed home that day. The deep swimming hole nearly claimed two other rescuers according to the 1924 Newspaper article about the incident, including his brother Ewart Garland. Marvin served overseas during World War I.
