Jeremiah Patrick "Jerry" Carroll, 84, was called by God to be with Him July 21, 2005, after a long illness. Born in Akron, Ohio, March 11, 1921, Jerry graduated from St. Mary's High School in Akron in 1939. Jerry was a first generation American, born of Irish immigrants Katie (Chambers) of Shamore of County Mayo and Jeremiah J. Carroll of Cork City, County Cork, Ireland.

A veteran of World War II and "D" Day, he served proudly on LST 504 in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, in both the Atlantic and Pacific conflicts. Jerry was active in the Akron community and became the third president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He had the great pleasure of serving as the grand marshall in the 2005 St. Patrick's Day parade in Akron.

He was very involved in the trucking industry early in his career and later became president of Morrison Motor Freight. Jerry retired from Morrison and moved to Las Vegas in 1977, but continued to work at Desert Inn Hotel.

He is survived by his loving wife, of 59 years, Kathleen Mary Kilroy Carroll. Jerry was an avid golfer and had a hole-in-one seven times, one for each of his seven surviving children; daughter, Mary Louise Mace and husband, Steve of Las Vegas; daughter, Joanne Hart and husband, Robert of Las Vegas; son, Lawrence of Simi Valley, Calif.; son, James and wife Sallie of Valencia, Calif.; son, Martin and wife Sue of Akron, Ohio; son, Jeremiah and wife, Anne Marie of Las Vegas; and son Daniel and wife, Keri of Las Vegas. He is also survived by his brother, John; sisters, Nora Silva and Eileen Poulton, all of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, who will miss him greatly. Jerry leaves behind 22 grandchildren and was preceded in death by one grandchild. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.

A vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive; Mass and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29.
