CHARLES J. BECK Dies at Age 86
ROME -- Charles J. Beck, 86, veteran employee of the Rome State School prior to his retirement in 1946, died early yesterday in his home on the Rome-Lowell Rd, after a long illness.
He was born March 18, 1874, in Wittenburg, Germany, son of William and Johanna Beck. He came to this country with his parents at the age of six, settling in Greenway, where he was educated and lived until he went to work for the State School.
On June 6, 1901, in Churchville, he married Laura Gerwig, with the Rev. Frederick Benke, then pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church officiating.
Mr. Beck first went to work at the state institution in 1894, when the grounds still housed the Oneida County Home. After five years, he was transferred to the power house, where he worked 15 years.
He later worked in the creamery and then became meat cutter at the institution, remaining in that position until his retirement. Except for a 10 year period when he and his wife operated a farm he had been employed at the school since 1894.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. J. LeRoy Frank, Rome; Miss Grace S. Beck, at home; and Miss Katherine J. Beck, Utica; a son, Louis E., Beck's Grove; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Barber, LeRoy, N.Y.; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
The funeral in charge of Mae F. Strong Funeral Home, will be at 2 Monday from St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Rev. George Kenyon, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Churchville. Calling hours at the Beck home today and tomorrow at their convenience and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
