IMPERIAL Nebraska -- Leland Milford Dehart was born Jan. 15, 1918, at Yuma, Colorado, to Floyd H. and Nellie E. (Frazell) DeHart. As a young man he moved with his family to Wauneta, Nebraska, where Leland attended school, graduating from Wauneta High School in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp on Sept. 25, 1942, and served in the European Theatre during WWII. Leland was a ball turret gunner and flew 50 missions. He went on the Polesti oil fields bombings. He served in Italy and went to various places bombing. Leland was discharged in September of 1945 and returned to Wauneta, where he married Glendene Doretta Louch on April 6, 1947.

The couple settled in Wauneta and became lifetime residents. Leland was employed at Hamilton's Garage for over 40 years and then after retirement, worked for the Wauneta Coop Oil Company for another 10.

Leland was very community-minded, serving on the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department, the EMT's, and acted as an elder for the United Methodist Church in Wauneta. He was a Senior Center Volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels until age 92. He was also the primary caregiver of his Mother; Grandma "D" and wife; Glendene in their later years. Leland was also very active in the Wauneta VFW and American Legion Posts, serving on the Honor Guards for many years.

Leland passed away Monday morning, July 30, 2012, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. He was 94 years of age. Survivors include daughters, Ruth DeHart of Spokane, Washington, Ledene Clapp and husband, Steve, of McCook, Nebraska; granddaughter, Josette McConville and husband, Justin, of Kearney, Nebraska; two great-grandchildren, Brodie and Lexie McConville; sisters, Irene Wright and husband, Loran of Palisade, Nebraska and Joan Church of Fort Collins, Colorado; many nieces and nephews.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Glendene; siblings, Merle, Marvin, and Mason; sister-in-law, Phyllis Shafer and brother-in-law and best friend, Bill Louch.

Memorial services for Leland DeHart will be held Thursday Morning, Aug. 2, 2012, 10 a.m. (MT) at the United Methodist Church of Wauneta, with Pastor Bonnie McCord officiating. Inurnment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Nebraska.

Liewer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
