Joseph Boynton was the eldest child born to John Boynton (d.1669/70) and his wife Ellen Pell (d. 1689) of Rowley, Essex Co., Mass. On May 13, 1669 he married Sarah Swan of Rowley. The couple had nine children, all born in Rowley: Joseph (b. 1670/71), Sarah (b. 1671/72), Richard (b. 1675), John (b. 1678), Jonathan (b. 1679/80), Benoni (b. 1681/82), Jonathan (b. 1684), Hilkiah (b. 1687), and Daniel (b. 1689). In 1715 Joseph and his family moved to Groton, Middlesex Co., Mass., returning to Rowley in 1730. While at Groton Sarah Boynton died and Joseph married as his second wife Elizabeth Wood on March 5, 1720/21 (intention).

Joseph served his community as a captain of the Military Company, town clerk, and representative to the General Court for many years.
