Hilkiah Boynton was the eighth of nine children born to Capt. Joseph Boynton (1644-1730) and his first wife Sarah Swan Boynton (ca. 1647-1717/18) of Rowley, Essex Co., MA. He was a joiner by trade. On February 2, 1708/09 Hilkiah married Priscilla Jewett (1690/91-1777), daughter of Capt. Joseph and Ruth Wood Jewett of Rowley. The couple had twelve children: Jane (b. 1709), Joanna (b. 1712), Priscilla (twin, b. 1714), Hilkiah (twin, b. 1714), Joseph (b. 1717), Sarah (b. 1718/19), Ruth (b. 1721), Jane (b. 1722/23), Hilkiah (twin, b. 1725), Mehitable (twin, b. 1725), Ruth (b. 1727), and Jewett (b. 1735). All but the last two were born in Rowley. Sometime in the mid-1720s the Boynton family moved west to Lunenburg in Worcester Co., MA where Hilkiah and his wife spent their last years. Hilkiah's will was dated December 10, 1734. The estate inventory, taken on 25 November 1745, gave the total value of the estate as £650.
