Jan Jansen was born in Golenkamp, Germany, son of Berend Jansen and Lyda Kuyer. His surname became Johnson after emigrating to the USA. He married Jessie Dykstra in Grand Rapids on July 27, 1893. He was the father of ten children, five sons: Barney, Peter, Edward, James, and Richard; and five daughters: Nellie Sneider (who predeceased him), Leida Syswerda, Margaret Shue, Frances Anderson and Evelyn Johnson.

GRANT--Funeral services for John B. Johnson, Grant Township farmer who died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Grand Rapids will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Grant Reformed Church. The body is at McKinley Chapel.

Mr. Johnson, a former Grand Rapids resident, is survived by his wife, Jessie, and nine children.
