Anna Jansen was born in Ratzel, near Uelsen, in the Bentheim region of Germany, and was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Berend Jansen and Leide Koyer. She emigrated to the US with her parents in 1886, and her surname changed to Johnson as the family acclimated to life in the United States. She was the wife of Jon H. Nakken, with whom she had four children. After his death in 1920, she married John Hazekamp in 1923, he died in 1928. She later married John Kruidhoff, who died in 1943. In addition to her son Geerd, who died at the age of nine months, she was the mother of one son: Ben Nakken; and three daughters: Jantien aka Jennie (wife of Edward Vandersilk and John W. DeJong), Alieda (wife of George Stahl and Sydney Wykstra) and Johanna (wife of Albert Vos).
