Herbert served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-24J #42-110139, 23rd Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Polk County, Florida prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 27, 1943 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-110139 took off Los Negros, Admiralty Islands on a shipping strike mission off of Yap Island. They were hit in the No. 4 engine by anti-aircraft fire and were also attacked by Japanese Zeros. They crashed into the sea with a loss of the entire crew.

Herbert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Herbert also has a "Cenotaph" in the Big Ochlocknee Cemetery, Chastain, Georgia.
