William served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24J #42-110139, 23rd Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wells County, Indiana prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on December 9, 1941 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Teacher and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-110139 took off Los Negros, Admiralty Islands on a shipping strike mission off of Yap Island. They were hit in the No. 4 engine by anti-aircraft fire and were also attacked by Japanese Zeros. They crashed into the sea with a loss of the entire crew.

William was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
