James served as a First Lieutenant on B-17F (#41-24546), 403rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 23, 1941, prior to the war, in Chicago, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesmen and also as Single, without dependents.

James was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 failed to return from a mission to shadow a Japanese convoy of four destroyers in the Vitiaz Strait which is between New Guinea & New Britain during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
