Mr. Grimes was born as Moses Graham to parents James and Millie Dennis Graham. He married Fannie Cheatham, the daughter of Joseph and Jane Jenkins Cheatham, on November 8, 1860.
Around 1880, Moses, and his brother Pleasant, moved their families to Jessamine County. It was about the time of this move that they, and their descendants, began to use the Grimes surname. Fannie and Moses were the parents of thirteen children; Joanne, Martha, James, Robert, Timothy, John, Elizabeth, Pauline, Sibbie, Samuel, William, Nannie, and Pleas D. Grimes. Moses earned his living by farming his own land. When his wife moved to Norwood, Ohio he elected to remain in Jessamine County. Mr. Grimes passed away from the effects of apoplexy, with a duration of six months.
