Mary Brooks was the daughter of Walter and Jane Lane Ward. While attending school in San Marcos, she met Dan Daughtery who was in the Air Force at the time. They married, but later divorced.

Mary Brooks then joined the service, against her parent's wishes. She was a dental technician and traveled all over. She spents some time in Japan.

On March 6, 1965, Mary Brooks was killed when the stove in her kitchen exploded & caught her clothes on fire. She was only 43 at the time of her death. She died less than a month after her father's death. She is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Rosenberg.
