Philip H. Bender, the second oldest of the nine children born to Peter J. Bender Sr. and Katherine Mallmann, was born on June 24, 1855, near Menamebach, Germany, which is near Koblenz. In April 1857 his family moved to Henry, Marshall County, Illinois. He received his education in this community and helped with the work on the farm. The family moved to Nebraska in 1886, settling on a farm near Cornlea, Nebraska.
He was united in marriage to Anna H. Heider. She was born in July 1866.He moved to Council Bluffs Iowa in 1902 and worked for Orchard and Wilhelm.
