Joseph Bender, the twin of Henry, was born on June 7, 1866, at Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, the son of Peter Bender and Catherine Mallmann. He received his education at Henry, IL, and then came with his parents in 1886 to Nebraska, and helped with the work on their farm near Humphrey, before going into farming for himself after two years. He was married to Katie Wunder on January 21, 1890.
Mr. and Mrs. Bender gradually acquired 320 acres of land four miles east of Humphrey. He was also very active in the affairs of his community. He was member of the Humphrey (6 years) and Granville (7 years) Township Boards, was road overseer, constable, and Justice of the Peace. He served for several terms as director of the District 67 School, and was a trustee of St. Francis Church. He also served several terms as a member of the Platte County Board of Supervision.

In 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Bender retired from the farm to a plot of 18 acres south of the present Humphrey Park. Here again, Mr. Bender was very active. He served seven terms as a member of the Village Board of Trustees, and was Mayor of Humphrey at the time the first major improvements were made (first paving and first sanitary sewer system), in 1915. He was one of the organizers and a charter member of the Ave Maria Council of the Knights of Columbus. He also owned and operated a horse drawn hearse for use at funerals.
