John was born in Mannebach, Germany. He married Miss Katharina Malhman of Udenhausen, Germany in 1852. They moved the United States in 1857 and settled at Henry, Illinois. In 1886, they moved to Platte County, Nebraska. John and Katharine had nine children but only eight were alive when John died. They were Peter and H.C. Bender of near Cornlea, P.H. Bender of Omaha, Mrs. Ed Leibel of Elgin, Jos Bender, John Bender, Mrs. Steve German and Mrs. Fred VanAckeren. Katharina died 28 Dec 1906 and afterward, John lived with his son, Joseph.
