Elizabeth Bender, the youngest of the nine children born to Peter Bender and Catherine Mallmann, was born on February 22, 1876, near Henry, Illinois. At the age of ten she came with her parents to Humphrey, Nebraska. She grew up on the family farm there and received her education. Mr. and Mrs. Van Ackeren settled in Humphrey, NE, after their marriage, where he ran a grain elevator and lumber business. In 1912, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, NE, where he was in the same business with his brothers. They also owned the Electric Light Business in Cedar Rapids. Mr. & Mrs. Van Ackeren had nine children, Wilfred, Helen, Laura, Rosella, Ruth, Arnold, Mary, Dorothy, Eugene, and Mark. Mrs. Van Ackeren continued to live in Cedar Rapids until 1941, when she moved to Lincoln, NE. Here she passed away on May 19, 1948. She was buried from St. Theresa Church in Lincoln and laid to rest in St. Francis Cemetery, Humphrey, NE.
