Mary Safronia was born in Pineville, MO on 26 May 1860. She had an older brother, John Wesley and a younger sister, Laura Jane. From their father's maternal side, the three children were 1/16 Cherokee. Their mother, Elizabeth, was also part Cherokee.

Mary's parents were both born in TN. Her father, Matthew James Barlow, opposed slavery and refused to accept slaves from his family as a wedding present. He joined the Ninth Kansas Calvary in 1863 and tended horses for the Union army. Returning from the war sick and disabled he became a blacksmith and kept a store. His life was threatened by several of his six Confederate brothers so by the time Mary was ten the family had moved to Woodson County, KS. By 1880 the Barlow family had settled in Wilson County, KS.

In Fredonia, Wilson, KS on 6 Feb 1882, Mary, 21, married Joseph Henry Butts, 25. Joseph, born in 1856 in OH was the son of James Vinton Butts and Esther Rice. The Butt family, originally Pott from Prussia were descendants of Moravians who settled in Berks County, PA. The couple had three children: James Royal, b. 1883, New Albany, Wilson, KS; Hazel Lucille, b. 1887, Fredonia, Wilson, KS; and Forrest Vinton, b. 1891, Howard, Elk, KS.

Thirteen years after their marriage, Mary divorced Joseph in 1895 in Severy, Greenwood, KS. By 1900 Mary, 39, and her three children were living in Case, Cleveland, OK as "Visitors" with Mareil and Marge Stowe and their three children. She listed her marital status as widowed, although her ex-husband, Joseph Butts, was living in Twin Groves Greenwood, KS. (He died in Tallahassee Leon, FL on 29 Dec 1909.)

On 10 August 1900 Mary married John Littleton Smouse, 51, in Case OK. The couple had a daughter, Donna Vivian Smouse in Dec. 1901. In 1908, Mary's oldest son, James Royal, married and in 1913, Mary's oldest daughter, Hazel Lucille married. Both moved to Oklahoma City.

By 1910 Mary, 49, was living separately from John Smouse in Britton, OK where she was Head of Household and was occupied as a "Farmer". Forrest Butts, 19, and Donna Smouse, 8, lived with her. She lived with Louis Habbuner, 45, her "Partner" and his brother, Phillip, 49.

In 1920 Mary, 59, lived in Denver, CO with her daughter, Donna Smouse, 18. Donna was "Single" and Mary still listed herself as "Married". She worked as a nurse while Donna kept house. Eventually, Mary divorced John L. Smouse on 10 Jan 1927 in Oklahoma City, OK. Sometime in the mid-1920s, Donna Smouse married and moved to Michigan. In 1921, Mary's two sons, James and Forest Buttts legally changed their surname to Barlow.

In 1930, Mary, 68, lived in Oklahoma City, OK with her son, Forrest V. Barlow, 37, his wife, Evelyn Wilson Barlow, and her three granddaughters, Rosemary, 10, Gail, 8, and baby Donna, born 7 Mar 1935.

On 11 May 1935 at the age of 74, Mary died while visiting her son, James Royal Barlow, 52, and his wife, Emily Hendon Barlow, who lived in Eureka Springs, Carroll, Arkansas. She was buried in Ingalls Cemetery, Ingalls, Payne, OK near her mother, Elizabeth Jane Albina Alexander Barlow. She left four children and nine grandchildren.

Thanks to Jill Binder for providing photos of Block 7 where Mary is buried. She says the block was purchased by H C Whipple. There is at least one infant Whipple buried in the block and an unknown burial — probably Elizabeth Alexander Barlow.
