Born about 1856 in Athens County, Ohio.

Joseph H. Butts disappeared after Fed Census of 1900. Information in the original copy of the 1900 census identified his vocation as "Veterinarian Surgeon".
Recent evidence from his mother's (Esther Rice Butts) estate settlement in 1902 indicates that at that time he resided in Tallehassee, Florida. Contact with the Tallehassee Public Library established that they had located a "Butts, Dr. J., vet. surg., 347 E. Virginia Street" in the 1904 Tallehassee City Directory.
When his brother James Vinton Butts died in 1911 his obituary indicates that Wm. H. Butts was the only sibling still alive.

Joseph H. Butts died 29 December 1909
Dr. Butts Dead. Dr. J. H. Butts, one of Tallahassee's prominent veterinary surgeons, passed into the Great Beyond Wednesday, at his home on South Calhoun Street, after a long continued illness resulting from rheumatism. Dr. Butts, before his recent illness was one of the best veterinary surgeons in this section; he was also manager of the City Wood and Coal Company. Mrs. Butts, who was Miss Beulah Horton prior to her marriage to the doctor, will live with her sister and brother, Miss Maud Horton and William Horton, who have moved here from Minnesota. They will reside at the same residence, on South Calhoun Street.
Dr. Butts made many friends in and around Tallahassee, who mourn his departure. He was one ever thoughtful of others, kind and big hearted.
The funeral took place from their home yesterday morning.
