CHANUTE, KS — On Thursday March 15, 1883, the members of the Betts family were summoned by telegraph to the residence of their father, Benjamin Betts, in Chanute Kansas.

Mr. Taylor Betts took the train from Maryville, Missouri and upon arriving, found his father beyond all human aid. After a day & night of sorrowful watching, the spirit of Benjamin Betts winged its flight from this world of pain & sorrow to the realms of everlasting day.

Numbers of friends will remember the genial disposition & kindly soul of our old friend & neighbor who was long a resident of Nodaway County, Missouri and the sympathy of all is extended to the family in their bereavement.

Benjamin Betts was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on June 24, 1815.

He was married in 1836 to Miss Leah Flaugh of Crawford County, Pennsylvania, by whom he had 9 children, 8 of whom are now living.

He moved from Pennsylvania, to Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1853, from thence to Polk County, Iowa in 1856, where his wife died in 1860.

He then moved back to Illinois & from that state to Nodaway County, Missouri in 1870. He resided there 9 years & moved to Kansas in 1879, where he ended his eventful career.

He received the best care & medical attendance that could be procured, but human skill was of no avail. At 10 p.m., Saturday March 17, 1883, bodily suffering ceased, and his spirit passed into peaceful rest. His disease was hypertrophy of the prostate gland & inflammation of the bladder.

Mr. Betts was a consistent member of the Protestant Methodist church for many years.

His funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.H. Bright of Chanute, KS. He was followed to his last resting place by a large number of sorrowing friends & relatives.
