During Prohibition, John ran afoul of the law and family legend relates that he and Theresa took their two sons and fled from Milwaukee to Kansas ahead of the "Revenuers." There they changed their surname to Swanson and until recently their histories remained a family mystery for many years.
Theresa died young of cancer of the uterus.
Their son, Harold, returned to Wisconsin after World War II, having lost, in a short period of time, both his parents and his only brother. In Wisconsin he renewed family ties to some extent.
