Born at Kollin, Kreis Pyritz, Pommern, Prussia, the tenth child of Christian Friedrich MITTELSTADT and Dorothea Sophia LAUE. Immigrated to the U.S. perhaps in October, 1855.

Settled at Concord, Jefferson County, Wisconsin and there, in the same German Methodist Church as were married the parents of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Christian married Theresa Albertina KASTEN, in 1861.

Later moved to Lowell Township, Dodge County. Chris left his wife and two children at home when he was drafted and served in the Union Infantry during the Civil War. Partaking in Sherman's March to Sea and subsequent Carolina's campaign, he was wounded at Averasboro, North Carolina, in March 1865.

Christian had two brothers who also came to the United States and lived in Wisconsin for a time before resettling in Fayette County, Iowa, Friedrich Wilhelm and Edward Julius Mittelstadt.
