Grandfather Ben was the twelfth of fifteen children born to Christian Rudolph MITTELSTADT and his wife, the former Theresa Albertina KASTEN. Soon after Ben was born the family left Jefferson County, Wisconsin and settled on eighty acres of farmland north of the village of Lowell in Dodge County, Wisconsin - land that Christian bought from his mother-in-law, Mrs. Augusta KASTEN. Here Ben was raised among his many brothers and sisters.

The family FREY from whom he chose a wife attended the same Methodist church and farmed about a mile away in Lowell Township.
