Alvin E. Burns, 81, of Georgetown and formerly of Princeville, Illinois, died at 11:57 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at his residence in Georgetown.

He was born August 26, 1923, in Princeville, son of Forest Winfred and Iva Grace Barrett Burns. He married Joan Jean Heiken on June 13, 1945, in Princeville.

Surviving are; his wife, Jean Burns of Georgetown; daughters, Barbara C. and Tom Jones of Whittier, North Carolina, and Patricia A. and Alex Alexander of Georgetown; two sons, Robert W. and Flora Burns of Amarillo and Gary E. and Debbie Burns of Alamo, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Duane Burns and Dean Burns, both of Peoria, Illinois.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and three brothers.

He was a World War II veteran, having served as a Sergeant in the US. Army cavalry.

He first farmed in Princeville Township for several years. He then operated a radial drill for Caterpillar. He began working as a lineman for CILCO in the 1950s, retiring as Western district manager in May 1979.

He was a member of the Princeville American Legion Post, and served two terms as mayor of Princeville. He was a former member of the Princeville Kiwanis Club and served as a volunteer firefighter with the Akron-Princeville Fire & Rescue Department. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Princeville, where he served as a deacon, elder and trustee. He had also been a member of Presbyterian churches in Elmwood, Illinois, and Weslaco, Texas, and lastly in Georgetown.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2005, at the Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home in Princeville, Illinois, with Reverend Gary Hutton officiating. Visitation was from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, 2005, at the funeral home. Burial followed in Swan lake Memory Gardens in Peoria, Illinois.
