Bernard Groner was born on November 26, 1887, to Stephen and Regina Groner. He was raised on the Groner farm on the Castle Rock side of Folk. When Bernard was born, he and his family were members of St. Joseph Parish in Westphalia. In 1905 when the new town of Folk and St Anthony Parish were established, the Groner family became part of te new town and parish.
Bernard attended five years of grade school in Westphalia. He finished high school at a school operated by the Benedictine monks at St. Benedict Abby in Atchison, Kansas. From 1915 to 1921, Bernard prepared for the priesthood by attending Kenrick Seminary.
Following many years of preparation, Bernard Groner was ordained to the priesthood on June 12, 1921, by Archbishop Glennon. After his ordination, he celebrated his first holy mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church. On June 16, 1921, members of St. Anthony of Padua Parish joined Fr. Groner for this special occasion.
Fr. Groner was first assigned as assistant pastor at St. Andrew Parish in Lemay for five months. He was then made assistant pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Josephville for eleven months. It was in 1923 that Fr. Groner received his first assignment as pastor. He served as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Scott City for 19 years.
The year 1941 brought this native of Folk Missouri back to Osage County. Fr. Groner was assigned to serve as pastor of Holy Family in Freeburg, Misouri. He came to Freeburg as our country was on the brink of war. While at Freeburg, he witnessed the first ordination of a native son of Freeburg. Fr. Sylvester Bauer was ordained to the priesthood on December 19, 1942.
Msgr. Groner served in Freeburg at a very difficult time for our country. As the United States entered World War II, communities across the country were dealing with loved ones' leaving. Msgr. Groner served as counselor to many families worried about the safety of their sons. When the war was over, he was there to greet those returning home from war and to help the parish adjust to the end of the war.
On July 22, 1962, in recognition for his years of priestly service, Fr. Groner was invested as "Right Reverend Monsignor" . The title "Monsignor" did not change things much for Msgr. Groner accept being addressed as "Monsignor"
It was in 1966 that Msgr. Groner celebrated his 25th anniversary of priestly ministry as the pastor of Holy Family Church. A mass was held on August 7, 1966 so not only celebrate his 25 years of service but to also bid farewell. Msgr. Groner would leave Holy Family Church and become the pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Rosati, Missouri.
Msgr. Groner cared for the Rosati parish until 1969 when he retired. He and his sister, Annie, both moved to Jefferson City where they lived in their retirement. In March 1971, Msgr. Groner fell and broke his hip. He remained hospitalized until his death June 6, 1971. Msgr. Groner died one week short of the 50th anniversary of his ordination. He was buried in the Holy Family Parish Cemetery in Freeburg.
