Mattie was born in Loy, Arkansas to James Thomas Burk and Martha Elizabeth "Millie" Whorton. She married John David Carpenter April 18, 1909 in Madison County, Arkansas. They had six children: Estus Clinton, Oral Ernest (Scott), Charles Edith Geren, Gladys Rheua Harper, Sidney Raymond, and Lee Vaughn. She spent the greater part of her life in Broken Arrow, where she raised her family. She is at eternal peace at the side of her Dave in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
