Son of Ezekiel Lindsay and Nancy Green.

Lewis Lindsay married first Jane McFarland on 6 Jan 1831, in Wilson County, Tennessee. Among their children were John E, Margaret Elizabeth (m. Davis), James, Nancy Jane, and twins Lafayette and Victoria (died as infants) Lindsay.

From 28 Oct 1839 through 18 Jan 1843, Lewis Lindsay served as postmaster at the post station of "Lindsayville." He also conducted a school in his home. Lewis Lindsay and J. C. Lanius operated a store in the Lindsayville area, most likely near Lindsay's house, in about 1852. (Exact location unknown, most likely northeast of Gladeville near current Franklin Rd/Central Pike area.)

After the death of his first wife in 1840, Lewis Lindsay married Elizabeth Everett on 23 Jun 1841, in Davidson County. Before 1800, Elizabeth Everett's grandfather John Buchanan had acquired land that would later became part of Lewis Lindsay's tract. Lewis and Elizabeth Lindsay's children included Thomas Hardeman Everett, Benjamin F, George W, Evalina Jane, and Zepporah Ellen Lindsay (m. Pendleton). The land on which their home was located subsequently passed to Elizabeth Lindsay and then to Ellen Lindsay Pendleton, remaining in the Pendleton family until the 1950s.

Lewis Lindsay was a well-known Baptist preacher in Wilson County. He served as pastor to the congregation at LaGuardo from 1857-1869, and at Mt. Olivet (Leeville) from 1869-1870. Lewis Lindsay's family Bible was discovered in the mid-1980s by Rev. Bob Johnson, pastor of LaGuardo Baptist, and is now in the collection of the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

The Rev. Lindsay is buried in the family plot of his youngest daughter, Ellen Lindsay Pendleton.
