MANSFIELD: JOHN SCHUTTERA lived his faith. He faced life the same way he faced death – with an active faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, assured of His promises.
Those promises are now sight, as John went to be with the Lord Wednesday afternoon October 10, 2012 from Primrose Retirement Center. He was 85.
Born May 22, 1927 in Shelby, to John and Elizabeth (Birmelin) Schuttera, he was graduated from Madison High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Navy, to serve in WWII, immediately from high school.
Following his military service, he returned to Mansfield and married Shirley A. Dillon on November 19, 1948 in St. John's United Church of Christ, a congregation that became their church home. John was an active member of the church, and formerly served as a deacon.
His faith became the foundation for his character. A man of integrity and generosity, he was the caliber of man who served others selflessly - "he'd do anything for anybody."
John worked with the former Page Dairy as route delivery man and later in sales. When the dairy closed, he went to work with the Ohio Department of Transportation, serving 20 years as a signal electrician.
John was blessed with a great sense of humor and a hearty laugh. He enjoyed sports, and followed the Indians, Browns, Cavaliers and Buckeyes, but dearly loved watching his grandkids' sporting events.
The caliber of his character became evident following the untimely death of his son-in-law Randy Bidinger. John knew he couldn't be his grandchildren's Dad, but tried to do everything with them and for them that their Dad would have wanted. He taught them much more than fishing, he modeled and mentored them.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Schuttera; their daughter Saundra "Sandy" (Edwin) Shears of Mansfield; grandchildren Marie (Paul) Eicher of Mansfield, John (Jessica) Bidinger of Bowling Green, and Anthony (Bethanie) Bidinger of Mansfield; great-grandchildren Drake Deno, Seth Eicher, Brantley Bidinger, and one on the way; sister Barbara (Dale) Garlick of Ashland; brother Philip (Marge) Schuttera of Oak Harbor; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother Richard Schuttera.
The Schuttera family will receive friends Sunday, October 14, 2012 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where his funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Steven Mortach will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery, where Richland County Joint Veteran's Burial Detail will hold military graveside services.
