Barbara Schuttera Deter Garlick, 90, of Ashland, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Hospice House in Ashland. She was born July 26, 1924, in Mansfield, Ohio to the late Elizabeth E. (Birmelin) and John Schuttera.
Barbara was an area homemaker her entire life, but had also worked at Therm-O-Disc. Spending time in the company of her family and friends brought great joy to her. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and working with sea shells. She was an active member of Grace Brethren Church participating in the Builders Fellowship Sunday school class. Barbara was also a member of Happy Trails Farm Bureau Council, Gideon Auxiliary and Christian Women's Club.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Dale Garlick; eight children, Daniel P. (Diane) Deter of VA, Jody (Emerson) Varga of Crestline, Chuck (Barbara) Deter of Ashland, Jerry Gardner of Sunbury, OH, Patti (Roger) Funk of Ashland, Karen (Dick) Goon of Ashland, Tom Garlick of Ashland, and Sandy (Jim) Terry of LaRue, OH; twenty-three grandchildren; and twenty-eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Phillip (Marjorie) Schuttera of FL; a daughter-in-law, Janet Deter of Mansfield; a son-in-law, Emmett Robertson of Mansfield; a sister-in-law, Shirley Schuttera of Mansfield; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth E. Deter; a daughter, Janice B. Robertson; a grandson, Heath Deter; two brothers, Richard and John Schuttera; and a sister-in-law, Mary Schuttera.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2014 in the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland. Additional visitation will be observed beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Brethren Church, 1144 W. Main St., Ashland. Pastor Norm Johnson will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon International or Grace Brethren Church.
