He immigrated to America in 1751 to Massachusetts aboard the ship Priscilla. In America, his name changed from Johannes Reich to John Rich.
Three years later in 1754 he married Catherine Sophia Weydman. Catherine's American last name is Whiteman.
They had 8 children:
Elizabeth Rich, 1756-1813
Mary Elizabeth Rich, 1756-1840
John Rich IV, 1760-1805
William Henry Rich, 1764-1826
Daniel "Dan" Rich, 1766-1786
Jacob Rich, 1770-1827
Abraham Rich, 1772-1773
Catherine Sophia Rich, 1774-1801
Moody Rich, 1780-1837
In 1757 he purchased land, with other Germans, in what is now Ashburnham, Massachusetts. The German settlement there was called the "Dutch Farms".
Their first winter there they lived in a cave, as there was no time to build a home before winter set in.
17 years later, the family moved to Haverhill, New Hampshire.
During the Revolutionary War, John Sr. delivered supplies to the American militia, and son John Rich Jr fought in combat units. Both participated in the building of forts to defend the frontier from British invasion.
After the War was over, about 1784, John Rich and his family moved northward from Haverhill, New Hampshire and settled near Guildhall, an area that is now Vermont.
John Sr. died at age 84 in 1813.
