The son of John & Maria Barbara (Staerger) Beidel, he emigrated to America in 1840. In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 3" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. His name is spelled "Biddle" on the rolls, which may indicate how he pronounced his last name. He also enlisted in Chambersburg February 24, 1865, mustered there February 28 as a private with the second organization of Co. K, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He married Laura Jane Durff and fathered Amanda Lydia (b. @1868) and Henry F. (b. @1869). In 1880, lived in Monroe Township, Cumberland County.
