The son of John & Maria Barbara (Staerger) Beidel, in 1860, he was a student
living in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had
brown hair and brown eyes. He reported in his pension that he was born in
Franklin County and then contradicted himself by saying his nativity took place
in Shippensburg, Cumberland County. Wherever he was born, it was in or near
Shippensburg.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg November 3, 1862, mustered into
federal service at Harrisburg November 11 as a private with Battery B, 2nd
Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (112th Pa), and honorably discharged with his
company November 27, 1865.

He married Josephine B. Musgrave ca. 1870 and fathered George Edgar (b. 1869)
and James Albert (b. 1872). Josephine died in 1881. He married Catherine
"Kate" Beecher and fathered Clarence Jesse (b. 1883), Emma Elizabeth (b. 1885),
Charles Henry (b. 1887), John Anderson (b. 1892), and Harry Faust (b. 1896).

DEATH CLAIMS C.W. BEIDEL, CIVIL WAR VET - Had Enlisted With Army Of Potomac At
Age Of 16 Years

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at the Messiah United Brethren
Church, South Penn street, at 10:30 o'clock for Charles W. Beidel, aged 90
years, a Civil War veteran who died Friday night at 7:15 o'clock at the
Chambersburg Hospital. Death was caused by the infirmities of age. He had
entered the hospital the preceding Monday.

Mr. Beidel's death came almost on the eve of another Memorial Day, when he would
have been honored with other Civill War veterans in the Memorial Day exercises
that are to be held here.

He was born August 29, 1846 west of Shippensburg in Franklin county, and at the
tender age of 16, he enlisted in the Army of the Potomac, 112 Regiment,
Pennsylvania Artillery, and took part in all the engagements of his regiment
during the war. He enlisted in 1862.

Returning from the army honorably discharged, he learned the occupation of
carpet weaving and remained in that business until almost 20 years ago when he
retired, being associated with the late Morris Hinkle.

For 30 years he was active in the affairs of the Corporal McLean Post of the
Grand Army of the Republic here and for several terms served as commander of the
post. He has taken part in a major portion of the Memorial Day exercises since
their inception, serving on the committees.

He was a member of the United Brethren Church attending services both at the
Messiah Church and the Hays Grove church during his life. He was also a member
of the Knights of the Golden Eagle lodge.

Survivors include five sons, Albert, Cambridge, Maryland; Clarence,, Walnut
Bottom; Charles, Carlisle, R.D. 4; John, Willow Hill; Harry, Leesburg; one
daughter, Mrs. Ira J. Jones, LaFontaine, Indiana; 30 grandchildren, and 21
great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Palmer Slenker of Oakville, pastor of
the Hays Grove United Brethren Church, and he will be assisted by Rev. E.E.
Spatz of the Shippensburg Messiah United Brethren church. Rites will be held at
the home of Clarence Beidel, in Walnut Bottom, at 10 o'clock, and at the
Shippensburg church at 10:30 o'clock. Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery.

The casket will be draped with the American flag. There will be a military
salute by a firing squad of the American Legion and there will be a Legionnaire
guard at the church services.

With Mr. Beidel's death, only one Civil War veteran, D.Wilson Boher, of
Shippensburg, remains in the Corporal McLean post of the G.A.R.
