John Peterson was born to Ralph and Susanna (Vandine) Peterson on June 19, 1807 in Lawshe, Adams County, Ohio, the seventh of nine children. Like his father before him, John was a lifelong farmer.

John married Ann Spurgeon on September 18, 1828. Their wedding was performed by Samuel R. Wood. They were married for 27 plus years until John's death on June 12, 1856 at the age of 48 Yrs 11Ms & 24ds.

To their union were born ten children; Ralph Vandine, Mary Ann (Polly), Sarah Jane, Matilda Ann, Elisabeth Ann, John Thomas, James C., Cynthia Ann, Joseph Riley and Martha Angeline.

Upon his death in 1856, John was buried in Lawshe Cemetery in Lawshe. Upon Ann's death in September 1901, she was buried along side him. They are buried in what I would consider the "older" section of the cemetery.

Note: Even though it appears by this memorial that John was married twice, he was only married once to Ann. In the research that I have completed, there does seem to be some confusion with Betsy verses Ann. Ann did have a sister named Elizabeth or "Betsy" and she married Sholinton King on March 14, 1822. This information was obtained through Peterson family records and marriage records compiled by the Adams County Genealogical Society.
