John M “Chuckie” Burns, Jr, 53 of 135 White Street, Springfield, retired member of the Springfield fire department and bartender at the Keg Room, died Tuesday of a heart attack in Mercy Hospital.
Born in Springfield, he served in the Navy in World War II and Korean War. He joined the Springfield Fire Department in 1946 as a provisional Officer and became a permanent member of the force in 1948.
With the exception of the Korean War years, he served with the department from 1946 to 1969. He was at the Mill, Walnut, Armory and Oakland Street stations and served in the fire inspection bureau.
He was a member of the Springfield Lodge of Elks No. 61, local 648 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, and the Massachusetts Retired Police and Fire Fighters Association.
He leaves his wife of three months, Mrs. Rosemary A (Malley) Burns; three sons Michael P, Thomas F, and John Michael Burns, III all of Springfield; two daughters, Mrs. Michael J Callahan of Westfield and Mrs. Joseph M Boduch of Springfield; three brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.
Full fire department and U S Navy military honors will be paid when the funeral is conducted Thursday morning at the T P Sampson Company’s chapel of the acres in 16 Acres, followed by services at Holy Name Church. Burial will be in St Michael’s Cemetery. Springfield Lodge of elks will conduct their ritual Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM
