Mary Ellen Peery Owens was the daughter of Samuel Ross Peery and Marie (Mariah) Jane Farris Peery. She was the fifth of eight children with four older siblings: Elizabeth Jane, Isabella Rachel, Emma Roxene and Francis Alexander, and three that were younger, Amanda Marie, William Albert and John Arthur Peery.
Mary Ellen married Evan Robert Owens on April 6, 1885 in Bloomington, Franklin County, Nebraska. They had five children, three sons and two daughters, LeRoy Earl, John Edwin, Walter Albert, Ida Grace Owens Bennett and Gladys Selinda Owens Korte. Mary Ellen also raised her step-son, Clayton James Owens.
Evan and Mary Ellen moved to Colorado around 1909 where they farmed near Holyoke.
