Maria Jane was the youngest daughter of Garrot Durling Farris and Elizabeth Famulener. She was born in Mineral Point, Wisconsin on May 8, 1836. She had seven older sisters and a brother who died as an infant.

Maria married Samuel Ross Peery on May 10, 1853 in Mineral Point. They lived in Iowa County, Wisconsin and raised some of their children there until 1871 when the family moved to a homestead in Franklin County, Nebraska west of Bloomington.

Maria and Samuel had eight children, three sons and five daughters: Francis Alexander, William Albert, John Arthur, Elizabeth Jane, Isabella Rachel, Emma Roxene, Mary Ellen and Amanda Marie. All except John were born in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. John was born in Bloomington, Nebraska.

After Samuel died in Jan 1910, Maria moved with her daughter, Emma, and son-in-law, John Dunafon, residing in Kansas. The following year, 1911, the family journeyed to a homestead near Abarr Colorado where Maria died six years later at age 81. Maria was buried nearby in the Yuma Cemetery.

Note: Her gravestone reads Maria J Peery however many records show her name as Mariah Jane Farris Peery.

Also: the death certificate was made sometime after the fact and has errors. Mainly that her name is : Marah Jane Perry and her death date is : November 28, 1918. Her death certificate states she died at age 81, 4 months and 20 days. This matches exactly with other information - her death date was: September 28, 1917.
Mariah's obituary from The Franklin Sentinel published in Franklin County, Nebraska is dated Thursday, October 4, 1917 and says she died last Friday, September 28, 1917 (twenty miles south of Yuma, Colorado) and her funeral and burial was last Saturday, September 29, 1917.
