Nathan Alexander Stedman III and two of his brothers, Winship Stedman and Elijah Stedman, migrated from Connecticut to North Carolina in 1784. All three brothers had received land grants in North Carolina in payment for their service in the American Revolution. According to the Pittsboro NX newspaper, The Communicator, Nathan died on 13 Nov 1847. The obituary mentions his Revolutionary War service. He also represented Chatham County in the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1827 and in the Senate in 1832-33 and was a Judge in the county. He and his wife were members of Saint Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Pittsboro, Chatham County, North Carolina. When the brothers moved from CT to NC they brought their parents, Nathan Alexander Stedman II and Prudence Hurlbut Stedman, with them.
The name Nathan Alexander Stedman has been given to many boys born into different branches of this family. Nathan III's military history is very interesting. He and a brother were young teenagers and serving on a vessel that was overtaken by a British Man O' War. His brother was killed by a cannonball while standing next to Nathan. Nathan and the other crew members were taken to Bermuda where they were prisoners of war in the British prison at St. George, Bermuda.
