Dorothy Jans, age 90, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the daughter of Jacob “Jake” and Emma (Hinders) DeGroote on June 29, 1927, in Butler County.

Dorothy attended county school near Parkersburg. As a child, she moved to Clarksville. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville.

On January 24, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage with Whipple “Whip” Jans at the New Hartford Methodist Church parsonage. After their marriage, the couple lived in New Hartford and later moved to Clarksville.

Dorothy worked at the canning factory in Clarksville and later at the packing and beet factory near Waverly. After her husband’s death, Dorothy worked for Randy Moad at the Clarksville Pharmacy, then at Doc’s Tavern.

Dorothy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville. She and Whip were custodians, did the lawn care and rang the bell at the church for several years.

Dorothy helped with the flood recovery in Charles City. When she was younger, she enjoyed playing tennis. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards with friends, making crafts with Nancy, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.

Dorothy died Thursday, November 9, 2017, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Whipple on November 8, 1975; one son, Harry Jans; one grandson, Dylon Jans; one great-granddaughter, Carissa Capper; her parents; five sisters: Anna Bartell, Hilda Sells, Annette Sessler, Darlene Vance and Ruth Bushing; four brothers: Clarence, Hank, Jake and Walter DeGroote.

Dorothy is survived by three children: Jerry (Lonnie) Jans, Nancy (Ronnie) Johnson and Robert “Bob” (Jennifer) Jans all of Clarksville; eight grandchildren: Dawn (Scott) Capper, Kerry (Kurt) Essink, Janie (Tim) Norton, Lisa (Eric) Trees, Crystal Jans, Casey (Wade) Wiechman, Carley (Brennan) Kennedy, Waylon (Brittney) Jans; fifteen great-grandchildren: Colton, Chase and Chelsea Capper; Allyson and Katelyn Essink; Nate and Jack Norton; Deric Trees, Aidan Hall, Violet Thorn, Piper Wiechman; Cash and Landree Jans; Zoey and Mable Kennedy; one sister, Alice (Jim) Jacobs of Allison; one brother-in-law, Frank Vance of Clarksville; and one sister-in-law, Dottie DeGroote of Arizona.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville and one hour before funeral services at the church.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 13, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa.
