A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member, with the Rev. Ricky Atkins and the Rev. Berlin Joyce officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She was born on October 10, 1923 in Stokes County to the late John Wesley Carter and Erna Marie Sands Carter. Mrs. Newman was a homemaker and had been previously employed with Washington Mills, Fuzzy's Bar-B-Que and the telephone company. She was a former choir director at her church and had currently taught the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers Rufus Carter and Paul Junior Carter, and one sister Bessie Lawson.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Henry Newman; six children, Gary Newman, Lanny Newman and wife Marie, Dawn Tilley and husband Gene and Glenn Newman, all of Madison, Ernie Newman and wife Dale, and Veronda Pruitt and husband Wayne, all of Mayodan; two sisters Pauline Nelson and Ruby Nelson, both of Madison; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Ray Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Dawn Tilley, 311 Westview Drive, Madison.
