An 11:00 a.m. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 24, 2017 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, with military honors provided by The Rockingham County Honor Guard.
A Patrick County, VA native, Henry was born December 24, 1922 the son of Peter Taylor Newman and Minnie Sheppard Newman. He was a World War II veteran serving in the 6th Marine Division during the invasion of Okinawa and Saipan. Henry was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church for 67 years and attended faithfully as long as his health permitted. In service to his church, he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher of the Junior Boys Class and taught during Vacation Bible School.
Henry retired from Gem Dandy with over 27 years of service. Afterwards he worked 12 years for the Wentworth Corporation.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Marie Carter Newman; son, Gary Newman; great- grandson, Samson Pruitt; daughter-in-law, Marie Newman; eight sisters, Annie Martin, Sibbie Watkins, Jean Newman, Ola Watkins, Bannie Watson, Zelva Joyce, Rachel Beasley and Thelma Gunter; three brothers, John Eddy Newman, Bennett Newman and Matthew Newman.
Henry is survived by five children, Ernie Newman and wife Dale of Mayodan, Lanny Newman of Spring Hill, FL, Veronda Pruitt and husband Wayne of Mayodan, Dawn Tilley and husband Gene of Madison and Glenn Newman and wife Dana of Madison; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; special pets, Tippy and Chester.
He loved watching birds, amateur archeology and collecting Indian relics. In addition, he enjoyed gardening and working with leather crafts.
