George Frederick Zook was the first United States Commissioner of Education appointed in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He resigned the following year to become the head of the American Council of Education, (ACE). President Harry Truman appointed Zook to head a 28- member Presidential Commission on Higher Education. In 1911 he married Susie Gant. In the early '30s they adopted a son Charles.
