Carrington enlisted as a Private on 22 July 1861 at Abingdon. He was a member of Company H in the 37th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. The Presbyterian was promoted to Chaplain. The son of Paul and Emma Cabell Carrington apparently also served in the First Virginia Cavalry, but no record was found. Carrington was a lawyer before becoming a minister. He held the pastorate at Greenwich from 1883 to 1889.
