Mrs. Minnie Mae Benton, 85, died Monday, April 22, at 3 am in St. Anthony's Hospital, Amarillo, after a short illness. Mrs. Benton had lived in Collingsworth County since 1942, in the Aberdeen-Needwood area until 1955, when the family moved into Wellington.
Mrs. Benton was born January 9, 1900 in Montague County, the daughter of William H. Whaley and Mary Hudson Whaley. She married W.R. (Rufe) Benton August 1, 1920 in Marlow, OK, where they lived until they came with their family to Collingsworth County. He preceded her in death March 3, 1977. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include four sons: Clarence Benton and Paul Benton of Wellington; E.J. Benton of Amarillo and Ray Benton of Kerrville; two daughters, Mazie Richards of Amarillo and Effie Moody of Lewisville; four brothers: John Whaley and O.L. Whaley of Duncan, Ok., Ben Whaley and Jim Whaley of Marlow, Ok.; 7 sisters: Lela Taylor of Electra, Ida Neal and Maxine Branam of Marlow, Allene Palmer of Pauls Valley, Ok.; Effie Palmer of Duncan, Ok.; Christine Massey of San Jose, Calif., and Mattie Whaley of Lawton, Okla. There are 35 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Benton was preceded in death by four sons, Bill Benton, Clyde Benton, Mason Benton and Bennie Benton; a step-son Luther Benton; and a brother, Billy Whaley.
