Charles Rosenburg Hatzell was born about 1820 in Louisville, KY about 1820 to John George Hatzell and Margaret Hinkle who were both originally from PA. His father disappeared when he was very young and he was apprenticed to an uncle. He married Elizabeth Jones of Bullitt County in 1846 and she died soon after. In 1852 he married Elizabeth's sister, Lavina Jones. He and Lavina had 3 children, William H. Hatzell (1853), Charles A Hatzell (1855) and Edward James Hatzell (1861). Lavina died between 1860 and 1863 and he married Mildred Burden in 1860. He died 11 May 1865 of an unknown cause at the same time as his mother.
