Margaret "Peggy" Hinkle was the daughter of John Hinkle and Catherine Scheurich. She was born in Bucks County, PA and came to Louisville with her parents as a young girl. She lived a carefree life as she grew up in Louisville, spoiled by her parents and brothers. She married John George Hatzell in Louisville in 1818 and had three sons, William Henry Hatzell (1819), Charles Rosenburg Hatzell (1820) and Augustus Muhlenberg Hatzell (1823). Her husband disappeared about 1825 while on a trip on the Ohio River. She bound out her three sons as apprentices to learn a trade and tried to continue her husband's business. She married Samuel Cralle in 1831 and they later divorced. In 1845 she married John B. Arnold.
She died in Louisville in 1865 and was buried in Cave Hill Cemetery.
