John George Hatzell was born around 1795 in the area around Philadelphia, PA. He was of German ancestry and was a merchant and businessman. He married Margaret "Peggy" Hinkle in Louisville in 1818. They had 3 sons, William Henry (1819), Charles Rosenburg (1820) and Augustus Muhlenberg (1822). George disappeared about 1825 during a trip on the Ohio River to the East to procure merchandise for his business. He was last heard of in Cincinnati. The body was never found and there is no other known evidence of his death.
