Son of Lee and Lucia (Snow) Sprague.
Colonel of the 51st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

From the Boston Journal, 18 May 1910.
Gen. Sprague is Dead in Worcester
Distinguished Career as Soldier, City Official and Merchant Closed.
"After a distinguished career as soldier, politician, city official and business man, Gen. A. B. R. Sprague died today, following an illness of two weeks.
Gen. Sprague was born in Ware in 1827 and in 1842 moved to Worcester and entered the employ of H. B. Claflin, which was the commencement of his commercial life. Later he engaged in business for himself, as a partner of Lee, Sprague & Co.
He was always interested in military affairs and at the first call for troops in 1861 he went to the front as captain and was mustered out in 1865, as brevet brigadier general of volunteers after four years of service.
His first political office was city marshall in 1867; then collector of internal revenue for this district, and later sheriff. While holding the latter office he did away with the shaving of heads of convicts and the wearing of pari-colored garments by short term prisoners.
Gen. Sprague was called to high offices by the G. A. R. and Loyal Legion. He was mayor of Worcester for two terms.
He was twice married and is survived by two children. He will be buried with military honors."
