Robert Bryans was born in Ireland about 1860 to Hugh and Juliana Bryans. He immigrated to N.D. from Ireland about 1887 where he declared his intent to become a U.S. Citizen. He was the younger brother of Edward Bryans (1856-1919) owner of the Bryans Ranch in Revile Co, N. D. reported to be one of the largest ranches in the state at the time of his death. Robert helped Edward establish his holdings.

According to the Family History book "The Story of Edward and Esther Bryans"-
"During the month of July 1891 While Edward and Robert were moving Haying machinery from the South ranch to the North ranch, Robert was drowned attempting to ford the mouse river on horseback during a summer freshet. Robert is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery at Minot, North Dakota, it being the only Cemetery in the entire area at the time."
